- It is said that the world appeared on Thaipusam.
- Murugan is the Tamil God. Murugan means beauty. Murugan Deva Senapati (Commander of the Gods) is therefore a God of War. The slaying of Murugan Darugasuran on the day of Thai Pooja is celebrated in Palani as a festival.
- Thaipusam is the day when Lord Shiva dances with Umadevi in Chidambaram and gives darshan.
- It was on this day that King Iraniyavarman came to Chidambaram and made great returns and visited Nataraja face to face. For these reasons, pujas are performed in Shiva temples on Thaipusam with special anointings.

- Vallalar Ramalinga Swamy shone on the rebirth star on a Thai Friday. To mark the occasion, millions of people gather on the top of the hill near Vadalur, where he shines, to celebrate the Vallalar festival.

He would get up early in the morning on Thaipusam, take a bath and worship Murugan. Special pujas are held at the Murugan temples as it is known as the birthday of Lord Murugan. Alms will also be given at the temple after the event such as taking kavadi and lifting the milk jug. It is customary for people to worship Murugan in temples.
